Opposition politicians who have been holding demonstrations in Mogadishu these days are expected to issue a critical decision today regarding the difficult situation in the country.
Opposition politicians who are holding a special meeting today plan to announce a type of election that they believe can take place in the country, as the term of government institutions has ended.
Reports say that this initiative is part of the Jubbaland and Puntland administrations, and they want to overcome the transitional period to establish a new government.
The opposition will also issue a strong statement to clarify their views, as they have been conducting political movements in recent days regarding the current political deadlock in the country’s electoral process.
The opposition have already met with various sectors of society, primarily traditional elders, scholars, women and youth, discussing their views on the situation in the country.
Villa Somalia still insists on direct elections of one person and one vote, while the opposition will present another type of election that they want to direct the country, and it is not clear how things will turn out.
However, the independent analysists and local Somali scholars believe that these opposition group so-called the Salvation of Somali-state is fragmented and have contradictory interests within the group, for example, the Puntland administration wants to wage coup against current government as they feel lost their leverages to control the decision-making elites in executive and the legislative organs of the state, moreover, the Puntland and Jubba land leaders don’t want to see strong and united central government in Mogadishu as they want continuation of the statuesque which indirect 4.5 clan-based elections in which they can select their representatives in the parliament and the executives without popular vote. while other politicians from the southern regions in the opposition want lacks confidence to be elected by the people in the capital and in the south due to their past history of corruption, mismanagements and series of failures to restore order in the capital and the surrounding regions of the country and therefore they believe that they can get something in the indirect elections by bribing the electoral committees.
However, the current government led by Hassan Sheikh is organized and united inside, they got also significant support in the capital and the surrounding regions in the south. As Hassan’s government resorted law and order in the capital and delivered a significant comprehensive military victory against the Terrorist groups who have been fighting inside the capital since 2006. President Hassan becomes very popular due to his political, economic and diplomatic commitment in Somalia particularly in the Southern Regions. His government secured explorative and petroleum exploitation and investment in Somalia as well as comprehensive military and defense agreements with the Turkish government as well as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the Egyptian army.
