Israel’s recognition of Somaliland’s independence has profoundly destabilized the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea corridor. While celebrated by Somaliland, the move has drawn the region into the broader Middle Eastern conflict, sparking severe diplomatic friction, and raising the risk of localized and asymmetric military confrontations in near future.
Major consequences and factors for potential conflict include:
1.Houthi Threats in the Red Sea: Yemen’s Houthi movement has explicitly warned that any Israeli military presence or intelligence infrastructure in Somaliland (such as at the Port of Berbera) will be considered a legitimate target. This threatens to draw Somaliland directly into the maritime proxy war.
2.Backlash from the Arab and Muslim World: Israel’s actions have been vehemently condemned by 15 Muslim-majority nations, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye. This widespread opposition has led to severe diplomatic isolation for Somaliland and complicates any future international support or mediation.
3.Escalation with Somalia: The Federal Government in Somalia considers the recognition a flagrant violation of its territorial integrity. Furthermore, Somali officials have raised alarms over unverified concerns that the agreement is tied to the forced resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza. This has fractured diplomatic relations and heightened the risk of direct conflict.
There are also attempts to re-equip Somali’s national army (SNA) with modern weapons to preserve and safeguard the territorial integrity of Somalia. Similarly, the recognition of Somaliland administration by Isreal has created popular anger and contempt and the Somali people feels threaten and external attack on their country by foreign country.
4.Resurgence of Al-Shabaab Extremism: Extremist groups like Al-Shabaab have weaponized the Israeli recognition in their propaganda, framing it as a “Zionist crusader” intrusion into the Horn of Africa. This narrative shift has the potential to bolster militant recruitment and internal violence within Somalia. Therefore, Somaliland will be preferred target as Al-Shabaab wants to show that they are defending the religion from the Israeli invasion and its puppets in Somaliland this will risk the peace and stability of Somaliland and indeed the entire region.
5. Intervention of the conflict by other international partners of Somalia such as Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yemen, Eretria, Djibouti, Pakistan, China and the Russian federation because all these actors have their own interest in Somali’s future and the security of the red sea.
